Final Trailer
[00:00:00] Blake Melnick: Well, welcome to for what it's worth. I'm your host Blake Melnick to let you know, we have an amazing interview in store for you next week. Our multitalented guests for the next episode of our music series past the jam has been an icon on the Canadian music and entertainment scene for four decades, a prolific singer songwriter and composer.
[00:00:23] Ron Sexsmith says of him that he is one of Canada's best unsung pop writers. He and his band have opened for the likes of The Kinks, Huey Lewis and the News, Heart and The Byrds He has shared the stage with Blue Rodeo Gowan and the Northern Pikes and Canadian guitar virtuoso, Colin Linden. He's a recognized radio personality.
[00:00:46] Having interviewed the likes of Steve Earl Burton Cummings, Colin, James astronaut, Chris Hadfield, and the great soul legend Solomon Burke.
[00:00:55] Blair Packham: So he walked in and he's wearing this black sort of thing that I
[00:00:59] can only describe as a [00:01:00] MooMoo because he was a big, big man. And so he walked in wearing this thing and everybody stops talking.
[00:01:07] And then we start talking again because Solomon is not saying anything. He just sort of walks in and looks up from face to face, basically. And the manager of the club, the owner of the club said, I'm not paying you, Doug. Doug is saying, you have to pay me. Well, I'm not going to Doug. I'm sorry. I'm not going to be able to, we'll see how these recordings go.
[00:01:25] So it's not even a promise of I'll pay you next week or whatever. It's now it's on spec. We'll see what happens and Doug's getting more upset. And Solomon goes to gentleman. And everybody turns to him. What we need is a hamburger.
[00:01:41]Blake Melnick: He is an accomplished producer and engineer, and has worked with Bob Hezron of pink Floyd, the wall of fame.
[00:01:47] He produced the Bob Reid songs, Highway of Heroes and Soldier, Welcome Home, which have become radio mainstays leading up to remembrance day in Canada. [00:02:00] Hockeyfans will remember his song Closer Every Day as the Edmonton Oilers theme song, as they marched to their Stanley cup victory in 1988. Your kids will remember his theme song from the hugely popular children's animated television series, Bey Blade, and many will remember his voice from yet another memorable children's class
[00:02:23] Blair Packham: rescue heroes
[00:02:26] Blake Melnick: With all thisgoing on in his professional career, he still has time to share his experience and music knowledge with young people. by teaching songwriting at Seneca college in Toronto.
[00:02:38] Blair Packham: I love being around the young people. What I love about it is honestly encouraging people. I feel like my role is to be a cheerleader, not wearing the outfit, but cheerleading people to do better, to write songs that communicate better.
[00:02:51] Our job is to make people feel something. And if we're writing only about our inner most feelings that might be moving to us, but it might not be moving to anybody else. [00:03:00] Steve Earle says, songwriting is empathy. It's nobody cares how you feel. It's how you make them feel. And so I can try and get that across and I find it exciting and invigorating so I feel like I have stuff to offer and I feel good when my students agree
[00:03:14] Blake Melnick: next weeks, a two part episode will be co-hosted by our current artist in residence, Oliver McQuaid, who will help me pass the jam to our guest. Be sure to tune in on your favorite podcast listing channel. To living the impossible dream.
